Default Ok, how's this for a weird drive size: 808.8GB

I wonder if it's a specific area of the platter (like the inner area) that is disabled, or it's just a 1TB drive that is speckled with bad-from-day-1 sectors that are quietly remapped out?

maybe some marketing geek thought that resurrecting the "8088" name would be good for business.

Yeah? I've had 4 x 750GB WD GP drives thrashing around in a RAID10 config in my db server for the past year... only one or two have failed, which is a pretty good record for me.

(Incidentally my NAS contains 750GB Caviar SE drives, which means both boxes are mismatched with regards to storage... a busy db server should have the fast drives, and the relatively quiet NAS should have the more power efficient ones. It's a historical legacy rather than a specific design choice so I'm currently progressively swapping the drives over.)

Speaking of failures, I'm returning a 300GB Velociraptor tomorrow as it is failing self tests and reporting uncorrectable sector errors... even an enterprise grade flagship model is not immune from my bad luck

Rowan, maybe some of the governments or high status personnel would like to hire you to wipe out hard drives that contain unwanted data.

You sure you don't want to go on Ripley's Believe it or Not show? You definitely qualify as an anomaly.. just got to think of a name for you now, and a catch phrase. Even the Zodiac Killer has nothing on the Hard Drive Killer.
