I guess I'm assuming that a domain name with the word "google" in there somewhere means the site is owned by Google. So my question is why would a wordpress theme be pulling content from Google?

not true...not all domains with the word 'google' in them are owned by google. Do you really think, googlebony.com is owned by 'google'?
You'll see google as a default link for just about any webmaster script and/or wordpress theme.
