Escom LLC paid a reported $14 million for the Web site in 2006. But the company failed to repay debt owed to DOM Partners LLC, the New Jersey-based lender that helped finance the deal.

As a result, sex.com will be sold "as is" in the equivalent of a foreclosure sale, according to a letter from DOM Partners' lawyers that was made public Tuesday. The auction is set for March 18 in New York, and bidders are required to appear with a certified check for $1 million to participate.

Richard Maltz, an auctioneer at Maltz Auctions who is overseeing the sale, said there has been a "good amount of interest" in sex.com. But he did not say how much the Web site could sell for.

"It is a very unique property," he said. "It will be an incredible opportunity for someone."

Indeed, sex.com generated $15,000 a day in revenue at one point, according to Charles Carreon, an attorney who wrote about the Web site's legal travails in his book "The Sex.com Chronicles."

Sounds more like 1996-99 era Crak, - when Steve Cohen, the alleged lawyer, check kiter and general con artist, stole the domain off Gary Kremen and buried the proceeds under his bed in Mexico and laundered the balance in various offshore locations. Ironically, that was probably the only time sex.com earned any serious level of money when Cohen stuffed up a banner farm - everyone else who owned it apparently just wanted to possess it and fantasize about running a website

I got no doubts, despite his constant claims of poverty, Cohen prob has more plastic cards from offshore banks than could be stuffed in a wallet. Hell, Cohen is probably in a good position to make a substantial bid for sex.com at the auction in an attempt to prove, in a warped kinda way, that everyone was wrong and he is totally innocent of the theft.... but, maybe that's not a good idea??

Only some of the real online porn guys, like some on this forum could do something amazing with that domain, but since we generally cant afford a 16million dollar domain, it will probly go to shit again

Looks like PETA wants Sex.com to promote Vegan Viagra. On the other hand, there is BullWhip who wants to acquire the domain as well.
