Thread: New mainboard no signal

My moms computer died this weekend so I bought her a new mainboard, cpu, hdd, ram and power supply unit. But now I am not getting a signal on the monitor. What could be the reason?
The computer has no pci graphic card but onboard grafik: nVidia GeForce 6100 2D/3D Graphic Controller, Shared Memory Upto 256MB

I should be able to get a signal with the onboard graphic controller or am I wrong and need a graphic card?

Does the case have a speaker? If not, see if you can find an older case with one that you can remove. If you hear more than a single beep at startup then it's the BIOS telling you something is wrong. I presume the hard drives and CPU fan are spinning up?

Yep the case has a speaker but I only hear one peep at startup. I am not sure if I have it on the correct pins on the front panel audio header though.
I also installed the other cables on the front panel header just as described in the manual with colored cable = positive and white cable = negative but I see a red light instead of a green light on the case.
Hdd, cd rom and cpu fan are spinning up, yes.

Have you tried a different monitor? Perhaps that's the reason the comp died?

Yeah I tried another monitor but didn't work with it neither.
How could the monitor cause the computer to die?

Btw. when I put in the electricity cable into the power unit it was on and not off and I "saw" some electricity on the going to the mainboard from there. Maybe that has something to do with it?

Try reseting the CMOS, usually done with a jumper on the motherboard.

They're electrically connected, if the monitor failed in a big way then it might be possible to damage the video port and other components on the motherboard.

Anyway... other things to check:

1) Have you plugged in the 4 pin CPU power connector?
2) Is the memory seated properly? Try removing it and reinstalling it.
3) Is the CPU properly installed? Try removing it and reinstalling it.
4) Are any expansion cards installed, and are they seated properly?

If you still have no luck, try disconnecting almost everything - hard drives (including power), keyboard, mouse, any USB peripherals etc. Basically just the monitor connected. See if that makes any difference.

Try also momentarily disconnecting the front panel stuff from the mainboard.

Tried that, nothing changed.

When the electricity is turned off or while the computer is running?

No, power off before disconnecting anything.

When installing CPUs, RAM etc you should also disconnect the mains power cable, or switch the power supply off if it has a switch. The mainboard still has power going to it even when the computer is switched "off" by your OS shutting down, or the front panel power button. Mainboards usually have an LED indicator to remind you that the board has power applied.
