I would be a little cautious of the hosts offering "unlimited" anything. Usually as soon as you start to work the bandwidth, your sites will have trouble staying up.

Technically its only as great as the fabric of time and space allows and no one can prove if the universe is in fact limitless as of yet.

Exactly, Its unlimited disk space and bandwidth. But check out this little nugget buried deep in "unlimited" hosts TOS.

    (TOS)
There are many things that can slow down a server. In order to guarantee the fastest possible connections, we need to monitor our servers for processes that overload them. Any party that slows our servers down, can and will be notified. ULIMITED HOSTING COMPANY reserves the right to kill any process (i.e. end a software's execution) that is overloading a server, or slowing it down heavily. Each account is allowed to use a fair portion of the server's Cpu time and Ram memory. We stick to the 60 minute rule, which means that each shared hosting account may not use more than 60 minutes of Cpu time per day. Accounts that generate more than 60 minutes of Cpu usage per day will be notified and asked to optimize their website performance to fit under 60 minutes or upgrade to a managed dedicated server with no Cpu limitations

http://www.maxprohosting.com/unlimited.html will give you more info on how "unlimited" hosts can claim to offer unlimited bandwidth and disk space without any legal issues.

Dude, DON'T host your TGP's on DreamHost virtual hosting. Honestly, don't even think about it. You'll lose so much traffic through all the outages, slow loads and whatnot, that it's just not worth it.

I made that mistake years ago when I started, and when I moved away from DreamHost (to a different hosting company, but still virtual at that time) my traffic tripled without doing anything. And I thought I didn't even have that much downtime at DreamHost. Looks like my surfers made different experiences

So, always remember: you get what you pay for. If you really wanna give the adult biz a serious try, invest a few extra bucks for a decent hosting.

Anybody who takes their business and websites seriously doesn't host with DreamHost. I'm just sayin.

    lol @ dreamhost unlimited plan.

i made the stupid mistake once to pay for the annual unlimited plan, just for shits and giggles, it worked for over two weeks flawless and then all of a sudden none of my thumbs would load on my tgps.

when i asked the support they told me i use way too much bandwidth (its was only like 400k daily traffic in thumbs i hosted there)

i wrote the $$ off as a business loss and never ever touched any unlimited host anymore.

They pretty much openly admit that they by "unlimited" they mean "a really low actual limit" on everything.

There is almost no way you can run even Wordpress on Dream Host without getting a forced upgrade.

    Been there done that.

I was forcibly upgraded to a private server. I am actually just installing an ST TGP on it for the lulz. So far it all seems to work.

i'm not just starting in the adult biz i've been in for 2 years now, but only small time. i've had 2 sites total, and now it's gone to 1. i've been hosting with xxxhostit for the whole time because i know how important having a good host is from the start. only problem is that once i passed up 4k in traffic my bills would fly up and i would break even + or - a few bucks . anyway my real problem is that i havent received a check from any sponsor since the beginning of december, maybe im starting to feel ccbills upgrade fail hit me or something i dunno what the reason.

so i also have dreamhosts unlimited plan server lying around because im building a few mainstream websites on the side that arent launched yet and i know my site only receives low traffic usually no more then 4k people a day and i found old posts on dreamhost of all this. i was curious if they've gotten better over the last 3 years and if my small time 4k/day site that i let run on its own without puttin much maintenance into it would hold up on there. my plans for the mainstream site are much more important right now but i dont want to be forced to leave this biz just yet either. i also have other small business cash flows under my belt, the more the better, but if this one is going to go negative i was hoping that putting it on a free server for a year might help out a little. since im not pushin your 400k traffic.

better question, how much traffic do you think dreamhost CAN handle these days

That's about like asking how many grains of sand are on the beach these days. You either take the risk or you don't if you feel it's all you can really afford at this time then go for it. As you say currently your site is making nothing so if Dreamhost shut you down tomorrow the worst case it cost you $0 to make $0.

Me too Ed. Been there done that. In this business you get what you pay for if you're lucky. If if cost's nothing it's worth nothing and sometimes in the case of my experience way less than nothing.

I never understood how they can get away with false advertising and build whole business strategy around that.

Here are some specific examples of things not allowed:

    • Copyrighted content you are not the copyright holder of.
    • File upload / sharing / archive / backup / mirroring / distribution sites.
    • A site created primarily to drive traffic to another site.
    • Making your account resources available (whether for free or pay) to the general public
They're not breaking the law they just have a narrow definition of unlimited. With these 4 restrictions they could shut anyone off if they wanted to. Still nothing illegal and not even very sneaky. LOL
