I'm confused. The title says higher standard of living but the chart and the page you've linked list only GDP.

Standard of living is a very subjective thing and people typically come up with several criteria to attempt to make such rankings, however I've never seen one attempt to hinge it all upon money before. The GDP of Qatar and the UAE could be in the billions yet I doubt that most people would want to live there.

It's skewed because we give half our money away while these other greedy foreigners horde it all.

The chart is GDP per capita i.e. GDP divided by population.

Point taken that standard of living is subjective and can't be boiled down to just money. Some people would take income inequality into account (Where the US ranks at the bottom of modern industrial nations) others might consider "freedom".

There is a Human Development Index Human Development Index - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia and in that measure the US does better but is still beat by Norway, Australia, and New Zealand.

Not sure if you are joking but the US gave $47.7 billion in foreign aid in 2009 (couldn't find a current stat) but the US GDP is 14.12 trillion. So we give away a little more than 3%. Interesting caveat, we give the most foreign aid to Israel.

gee, one might almost think that having the goals of most liberty, most prosperity, strongest military, least income inequality, most this, most that, and most the other, are somewhat contradictory

Do you have any idea how many well paying jobs i could create with just 1 billion let alone 47 billion dollars?

Fuck i could buy my own congress, create my own military and turn Florida into the United State of Marijuana growers.

Toker, first off I never made a moral argument one way or the other about international aid. You said we give "half our money" and I pointed out that it was 3%. Furthermore, that 3% distributed to many countries would not be enough to skew the stats.

Well Obama sunk $700 billion into rebuilding our infrastructure and other job producing projects and that barely made a blip on the national economy as for as jobs go.

Florida alone has a GDP of $748 billion dollars. $47 billion just isn't that much when dealing with entities such as Nations or States.

You also have to take into account these investments are being made by people whose profession is not investing or business but rather winning popularity contests. they're not good with money.
